History

The Centre for research and documentation on Oceania (CREDO, UMR 7308) was created in January 1995, in the form of a Mixed Research Unit (UMR) shared between the French CNRS and the EHESS. In 1996, the CREDO researchers created a partnership with the Provence University today known as the Aix-Marseille University, to provide educational courses for Masters 1 and 2, and post-graduate students in the department of Anthropology*.

Alongside the IrAsia (UMR 7306) and an UMS devoted to the documentation and promotion of its research, the CREDO is one of the three constituent components of the Asia-Pacific Organisation (Maison Asie-Pacifique).

The field of research of interest to the CREDO is related to contemporary developments in societies in Australia, Melanesia, Micronesia, and Polynesia, and to their relationship with the Austronesian world. The research deals predominantly with anthropology, but combines this with the contributions of archaeology, history, linguistics, political science, museology, ethnomusicology and multimedia.

The laboratory has established three sectors of activity:

•  the first is relevant to research activities in anthropology, history, ethno-archaeology and linguistics, centred on Oceania (Australia, Melanesia, Micronesia, Polynesia).
• the second is relevant to the education provided by the Anthropology department of the Aix-Marseille University (from first year to doctoral studies), and the Masters and doctoral courses of the EHESS. Further information can be found on the pages dealing with Education.
