Current Position

Professor of anthropology at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (EHESS), Paris. Former Director of the "Centre de Recherche et de Documentation sur l'Océanie" (CREDO), CNRS/EHESS, Université de Provence, Marseille.

1960-62 : Lecturer in anthropology, Assistant to Professor Fernand Braudel at E.H.E.S.S
1963-66 : Senior Lecturer in anthropology, Assistant to Professor Claude Lévi-Strauss at the Collège de France
1967-70 : Researcher at the French National Center for Scientific Research (C.N.R.S), in charge of a research program in the Highlands of Papua New Guinea among the Baruya.
1971-1981 :     Professor of anthropology at the E.H.E.S.S., Paris.
1982-1986 : Scientific Director of the French National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS), Head of the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences
1986-     : Professor of anthropology (de classe exceptionnelle) at the E.H.E.S.S.
